Outside those hours: the emergency line
What counts as an emergency
- Pain that painkillers do not settle
- Swelling of the face or the gum
- A tooth broken or knocked out in an accident
- Bleeding that will not stop after an extraction
What a normal appointment can cover
- A routine check-up or a scale and polish
- Mild sensitivity, without continuous pain
- How something looks
Before you reach the practice
- Call first: on the phone we can tell you what to do in your situation.
- Do not put anything on the tooth or the gum without asking.
What to do until you get to us
Toothache
- Take an ordinary painkiller you have used before, at the dose on the leaflet.
- Don't put aspirin or other tablets directly on the tooth or gum: they burn the lining of the mouth.
- Avoid very cold, hot or sweet food on the painful side.
- Call us: pain that wakes you at night shouldn't be put off.
Broken tooth
- Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- Keep the broken piece, if you find it, in a clean container with water or milk.
- Hold a cold compress on your cheek if you were hit.
- Avoid chewing on the broken tooth and call us the same day.
Swelling
- Hold a cold compress on your cheek, a few minutes on, a few minutes off. Don't apply heat.
- Don't try to burst the swelling.
- Call us the same day: swelling usually means an infection that needs treating.
- If the swelling spreads towards the eye or the throat, or you find it hard to swallow or breathe, call 112.
Bleeding
- Place a clean, rolled-up gauze on the bleeding spot and bite down firmly for 30 minutes, without lifting it to look.
- Keep your head raised and don't rinse.
- If the bleeding hasn't stopped after 30 minutes of pressure, call us.
Tooth knocked out
- Every minute counts: a tooth put back within the first hour has the best chance.
- Hold the tooth by the crown, the white part, not by the root.
- If it's dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline, without scrubbing.
- If you can, put it back in its socket and hold it there by biting gently on a gauze.
- If you can't, keep it in milk or saline, not in water and not dry, and come in straight away.
- In children, don't put back a knocked-out baby tooth; keep it and call us.
