Tooth extraction

Removing a tooth that can no longer be saved, under local anaesthetic.

What it is

An extraction means taking a tooth out of the bone. We only do it when the tooth can't be saved with root canal treatment, a crown or gum treatment, or when keeping it does more harm than good.

How it works here

With local anaesthetic you feel only pressure. A simple tooth comes out in a few minutes; an impacted wisdom tooth needs a small procedure. Beforehand, we discuss how to replace the tooth, if needed.

After the extraction

The first day matters most: don't rinse, spit or smoke. Everything, step by step, is in Recovery after a tooth extraction. More at Extractions and wisdom teeth.

The gum closes within a week or two, and the bone rebuilds over a few months.
