Crowns and dentures

Dental crown

A cap covering a damaged tooth, restoring its shape and its strength when chewing.

What it is

A dental crown covers the whole visible part of a weakened tooth, like a cap. It restores the tooth's shape, colour and strength, so it can chew again without the risk of breaking.

When it is needed

When a tooth is too broken down for a filling, after root canal treatment on back teeth, when a large filling or a crack puts it at risk, or on an implant, as the visible tooth.

How it works here

The tooth is prepared (reshaped) under local anaesthetic and scanned, usually digitally. You wear a temporary crown until the final one is ready, which we try in and cement. What comes next is in After a dental crown.
