Sinus lift
Lifting the sinus membrane to make room for the bone an upper-jaw implant needs.
What it is
Above the upper back teeth sits the maxillary sinus, an air-filled space. After teeth are lost, the bone under the sinus thins. A sinus lift gently raises the membrane lining the sinus and places graft material beneath it, so there is enough bone for an implant.
When it is needed
When the CBCT scan shows that, around the upper back teeth, the bone isn't tall enough for the implant needed.
How it works here
It is done under local anaesthetic, sometimes in the same visit as the implant, sometimes a few months before. The new bone usually needs a few months to mature. It is a form of bone graft.
For a few days afterwards, avoid blowing your nose hard or sneezing with your mouth closed.
