After an adjustment appointment
What follows each adjustment visit, and how long the usual discomfort lasts.
How recovery goes
The first hours
After an adjustment, the new wire or elastics put pressure on the teeth again. The feeling of tightness usually starts within a few hours. Pick something soft for dinner.
The first 2–3 days
Discomfort is greatest in the first two days and then eases on its own. Soft food and, if needed, the painkiller the dentist recommended are enough. If you wear elastics, wear them exactly as we told you: without them, the adjustment doesn't work.
An adjustment doesn't hurt during the visit: it's short, and the tight feeling only comes a few hours later.
Until the next adjustment
Cleaning stays the same: brush after every meal and use interdental brushes. Adjustments are usually every four to six weeks.
This is usual
- Teeth feeling tight and tender when chewing for a day or two.
- A slight headache or jaw ache on the first day.
- The end of a new wire that you feel on your cheek for a few days.
This is not usual
- Discomfort that hasn't eased after four days.
- A wire end that pokes and can't be covered with wax.
- A bracket has come off.
- You've lost your elastics and have no spares.
Call us if
- A wire or a loose bracket is cutting you and you can't cover the end with wax.
- A knock to the mouth that has moved the teeth or the brace.
- Swelling of the gum or cheek that is growing.
