Fixed braces

Brackets bonded to the teeth and joined by a wire, aligning them over several months.

What they are

Fixed braces have small pieces called brackets bonded to each tooth, joined by an archwire. The wire applies gentle, constant pressure that gradually moves the teeth into position.

When they suit

For crowding, rotated teeth, gaps and many bite problems, in teenagers and adults. For complex movements they are usually the safer option compared with clear aligners.

How it works here

Fitting takes one visit and doesn't hurt. Adjustment visits follow, usually every four to six weeks, and a retainer after treatment. The first days are covered in The first days with fixed braces.

During treatment, brushing after every meal and using interdental brushes prevent white marks and decay around the brackets.
