Retainer
What you wear after treatment to stop the teeth moving back to where they were.
What it is
A retainer holds the teeth in the position reached after orthodontic treatment. It can be a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth, a clear tray worn at night, or both.
Why it is needed
Once the brace comes off, the bone and fibres around the teeth need time to settle, and the teeth tend to drift back. Without a retainer, part of the result is lost.
How long it is worn
For adults, usually long term. A bonded wire is checked at your check-ups, and a tray is replaced when it wears out. More at Braces and aligners.
A retainer tray is cleaned daily with a brush and cold water, not hot, so it doesn't warp.
