Gingivitis
Inflammation of the gums, with bleeding when brushing; it heals if treated in time.
What it is
Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum, caused by plaque and tartar at its edge. It is the first stage of gum disease and the only one that heals completely.
The signs
Red, swollen gums that bleed when you brush or floss, sometimes bad breath. It usually doesn't hurt, so many people ignore it.
What can be done
A professional clean and proper brushing at home, with daily cleaning between the teeth. The bleeding usually eases within a few days. Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, when the inflammation reaches the bone.
In pregnancy, gums inflame more easily because of hormones: a clean and careful brushing keep gingivitis under control then too.
