Gum treatment

Gum recession

The gum pulling back from the tooth, leaving the root exposed and sensitive.

What it is

Gum recession means the gum has pulled back from the tooth, exposing part of the root. The tooth looks longer, and the root, not covered by enamel, becomes sensitive.

Why it happens

From brushing too hard with a hard brush, from gum disease, from grinding, from the position of the teeth or, sometimes, after orthodontic treatment. Smoking makes it more likely.

What can be done

First we stop the cause: gentle brushing with a soft brush, treating the gums, a night guard if you grind. Sensitivity is reduced with a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. In some cases the gum can be covered surgically.

A receded gum doesn't grow back on its own, so it's worth catching early.
