Scaling
Removing tartar from the teeth and below the gumline, which prevents gum inflammation.
What it is
Scaling removes tartar, the hardened plaque that builds up on the teeth, mostly at the gum line and between the teeth. Once it has formed, brushing won't shift it.
Why it matters
Tartar irritates the gum: first it bleeds when you brush, then the gum can recede, and if left untreated the inflammation reaches the bone that holds the teeth. Scaling stops that at the first step.
How it works here
With an ultrasonic instrument and fine hand instruments, followed by professional polishing. Usually every six months. Details at Professional cleaning and in After scaling and polishing.
Between appointments, brushing twice a day and cleaning between the teeth slow tartar build-up considerably.
