How the cost of a treatment is set

Why the cost of treatment is set after the diagnosis, what the written estimate contains, and why the same treatment can cost different amounts for different patients.

Why we don't quote before the consultation

The same question, “how much is an implant?”, has different answers for two patients, because their mouths are different. One has enough bone; another needs a bone graft first. One needs a single tooth; another needs a full-arch restoration. A figure given over the phone would either be too low and grow along the way, or too high and worry you for nothing.

We'd rather tell you the cost once, after we know what we are treating, and keep it as written in the plan. That is what “a written plan, clear costs” means.

What the consultation shows

The consultation starts with a conversation and a clinical examination. Then, depending on the case, we take a panoramic X-ray (OPG), which shows all the teeth and the bone in one image, and a CBCT scan, which shows the bone in three dimensions where we are planning an implant.

On these images we show you what we see: which teeth need treatment, how much bone there is and what options are possible.

What the written plan and estimate contain

After the consultation you get your treatment plan in writing, together with an estimate (deviz estimativ). The plan covers:

  • the options for your problem, with the strengths and limits of each;
  • the stages of each option and their order;
  • how long it takes, including waiting periods such as implant healing;
  • the estimated cost of each stage and what it includes.

You take it home, read it calmly and decide. If something comes up along the way that couldn't be seen at the start, we tell you before doing anything extra, not after.

What drives the cost, by treatment

  • Dental implants: the number of implants, whether a bone graft or sinus lift is needed, the type of abutment and crown.
  • Crowns, bridges and dentures: how many teeth are involved, whether the supporting teeth need root canal treatment first, the material.
  • Braces and aligners: the type of appliance, how far the teeth need to move and how long treatment lasts.
  • Cosmetic dentistry: the number of veneers, their material, whether whitening is done at the practice or at home.
  • Gum treatment: how advanced the gum disease is and how many sessions it needs.
  • Emergencies: what has to be done on the day; definitive treatment then goes into a plan.

How you pay

Payment is by cash or card. For larger treatments that run over several months, payment can be spread in stages as the work progresses: you pay for the stage you are having, not for the whole treatment up front.

Questions about cost

How much does a dental implant cost? It depends on how many implants are needed, how much bone you have and the type of crown. We tell you exactly after the consultation and the CBCT scan, in the written estimate.

Is there a charge for the consultation? We tell you what the consultation costs when you book, on WhatsApp or by phone.

Can I pay in instalments? For larger treatments you can pay in stages as the work progresses. We agree the details together, in the plan.

Why is the price different from another practice? We don't compare practices. What we can do is tell you exactly what our plan includes, so you can compare on your own terms.
